The primary goal of this course is to provide the student with a working knowledge of the fundamental capabilities of the Network Installation Management (NIM) facility of the AIX 7.3 operating system. This course uses a combination of instructor lectures and lab machine exercises to provide the student with practical background knowledge of the topics covered. The lecture portion of this course will cover all the information required to create and maintain a Network Installation Management (NIM) environment. The course will start with the students examining an existing NIM master. Then, the students will install the filesets required to configure a system to serve as a NIM master and configure NIM resources required to perform NIM operations. They will also have an opportunity to perform several key NIM related tasks. Each lecture is reinforced with extensive hands-on lab exercises which provide practical experience. The idea is to build a NIM environment (NIM master, NIM resources, and NIM clients), then use the NIM master and NIM resources to perform NIM operations on the clients.

This course provides advanced AIX system administrator skills with a focus on availability and problem determination. It provides detailed knowledge of the ODM database where AIX maintains so much configuration information. It shows how to monitor for and deal with AIX problems. There is special focus on dealing with Logical Volume Manager problems, including procedures for replacing disks. Several techniques for minimizing the system maintenance window are covered. This course is designed from a user's perspective. The students are not required to have any prior knowledge of AIX or any other UNIX-based system. The course units have been designed in a logical order to enable a novice user to identify the major components of AIX. The students are introduced to the operating system by logging in and out of the system and carrying out a few basic operations. The hierarchical tree structure is explained in detail, as well as functions that can be carried out on files and directories. The concept of a shell is introduced and the operations that are supported through it. The one editor that is covered is vi, as it is available on most UNIX platforms. The concept of users owning jobs and processes is introduced, including the environment in which processes execute. Finally, to pull together all the ideas from the previous units, a few useful tools are introduced which help users customize their environments and write very simple shell scripts. This course provides content and hands on labs in a self paced virtual course (SPVC) environment. Upon meeting course and badge completion criteria, students will receive an IBM badge.
